Working at Hays - Our People
Profiles of some of our people
Choosing the right career, or to change jobs, is an important decision - probably one of the biggest decisions you will make. In order to assist you, here are some recently completed interviews with Hays people, to give you a feel for what it's like to work for a global leader in specialist recruitment.
Trainee Consultant
Background:
I have been working at Hays for 6 months and prior to this I was studying a Bachelor of Laws and Legal Practice and a Bachelor of Commerce.
Why did you choose a career in recruitment?
I worked as a lawyer for a while but decided on a career change to recruitment. I wanted to work for Hays as the organisation offers everything I saw in a dream job such as career development, training opportunities, uncapped earning potential, international opportunities, and most of all working for a market leader.
What was the first year like?
It has been challenging but the opportunities offered to me in this role keep me motivated. I joined Hays as a Trainee Consultant and it is a part of my development that I will advance into the role of a Consultant in the coming months. I aspire to progress through the company and become a Regional or Business Director.
What do you enjoy about your job?
I enjoy the fact that no two days are the same, and that my future in this company is what I make of it. I feel personally fulfilled and recognised for the hard work I put in. Hays provides me with a forum where I can excel. I wake up every morning smiling with purpose and drive to help people to work their way into a dream job, in an industry I specialise in.
Consultant
Background:
Before joining Hays I completed a Business degree majoring in Marketing. I also lived and travelled overseas for a year. I joined Hays as a Trainee Consultant within the legal team. I have since been promoted to Consultant.
Why did you choose a career in recruitment?
I talked to friends who worked in the recruitment industry. I did some research and decided it was a career I wanted to pursue.
Why did you choose to work at Hays?
I chose to work at Hays because I was looking for an organisation offering international career opportunities and also structured career progression. In the future I hope to work in other countries.
What was the first year like?
The first year has been a steep learning curve. Time management has been a particular challenge - there is always a lot to do! I was nominated for Trainee Consultant of the quarter which came as a great surprise and I'm enjoying great results each month.
What do you enjoy about your job?
I really enjoy the interaction with my clients and candidates. Attending client events and networking are also enjoyable aspects of the role but the greatest part is that I am constantly being challenged and learning new things. The success of my business is completely within my control - the more I put into this job the more I get out of it.
Senior Consultant
Background:
I have been at Hays since March 2006 and prior to this I completed a Bachelor of Economics (Social Science) followed by an honours year in Psychology.
Why did you choose a career in recruitment?
When I finished my degree I wanted to move into a role that would expose me to the business world, allow me to apply some of the things that I had learnt in my study of Psychology and that would provide me with a challenge. After some research I decided that recruitment was the path I would follow.
What was the first year like?
My career at Hays has been incredible so far. The company is a 'meritocracy', where consultants are rewarded for their success. This means that if you work hard you can experience career progression and promotion even within your first year. So far I have won an award for the Best Performing Trainee Consultant and have enjoyed two promotions (from Trainee Consultant to Consultant, and then to Senior Consultant) and have had the honour of being nominated for a FEMA Rookie of the Year award.
What do you enjoy about your job?
I love my job and can see a continuing career for myself at Hays. The greatest part is that I am constantly being challenged and learning new things - no two days are ever the same so there is no possibility of boredom either now or down the line. I also love the fact that I run my own business and that the success of my business is completely within my control - the more I put into this job the more I get out of it.
Senior Consultant
Background:
I have been working at Hays for 18 months and have recently been fast tracked to Senior Consultant. Before I joined Hays, I was studying a Bachelor of International Business, majoring in International Management.
Why did you choose a career in recruitment?
I chose a career in recruitment because in a booming economy and a candidate short market, recruitment has become an even more important industry. It is essentially a sales and business development role, which is something I enjoy.
What was the first year like?
The biggest challenge for me in the first year was developing my time management skills. Recruitment is a job that requires you to "juggle ten balls in the air at all times", constantly visiting clients, interviewing candidates and taking phone calls. Time management skills are essential for this role. The knowledge and assistance from my colleagues has been invaluable in helping me develop my business and my recruitment skills in general.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy the client interaction this job provides. Making a quick phone call and organising a meeting with the Director of a private bank to discuss their growth plans and how you can assist is a unique experience.
